Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go encouraged the public, most especially the youth, to focus their time, attention and effort in developing their skills and talents through sports. He also urged the youth to help in nation building and join the fight against illegal drugs, criminality and corruption.
“Mga bata, may paalala ako sa inyo. Nakikiusap kami ni Pangulong Duterte sa inyo na labanan natin ang iligal na droga,” Go said in his short speech during the inauguration of the new basketball gym in Valenzuela City on Sunday, January 26.
The senator also urged the youth to veer away from the influence of illegal drugs given their severe adverse effects to a human’s brain. He added that they should rather focus their time on sports and other productive activities that can teach them values of sportsmanship, discipline and hard work.
“Huwag iyong droga.
The Senator also recommended that for those who have been addicted to illegal drugs and would want to change for the better, there are rehabilitation centers available for them to recover and be treated properly.
“Iwasan natin ang droga dahil ‘yung isang paa ninyo nasa hukay. Iyon ang totoo. Mag-basketball na lang po tayo,” Go advised.
Meanwhile, the senator congratulated the local government officials who were instrumental in constructing the basketball gym. He said that the initiative will create a venue to develop athletes and hone the youth to become productive members of society through sports and other wholesome community-based activities.
One of the main advocacies of Go is to promote genuine grassroots and long-term sports development programs throughout the country. The Senator filed last year Senate Bill (SB) 397 calling for the establishment of the National Academy of Sports for High School. It was later adopted and co-authored by other senators as SB 1086 which seeks the establishment of a Philippine High School for Sports. Go has constantly emphasized how sports can help the youth become productive members of society and bring honor to the country.
“By integrating proper education with a program focused on sports, we not only keep our youth away from the evils of dangerous drugs and criminality, we also create a better future for them, whether it be in the field of sports or other important fields,” the senator said.
After the inauguration program of the sports facility in Valenzuela, Go also participated in a three-point shootout where he faced four other opponents. Scoring eleven points, the senator won the competition and then donated new shoes to the four players who played with him.
