Bong Go lauds DILG as vital ‘lifeline’ amid pandemic

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has expressed his full support to the proposed 2021 budget of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), which serves as “one of the most important lifelines” of the government during the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

During a budget hearing by the Committee on Finance on Thursday, Go lauded the DILG, particularly the Philippine National Police, for strengthening contact tracing and ensuring that local government units (LGUs) have the capacity to “combat, cope, and recover” from Covid-19.

“Under the DILG is our Philippine National Police which played, and continues to play, a vital role in keeping the peace and security of the nation and aid in the enforcement of the ongoing imposed community quarantine,” Go said.

Go said the DILG is also leading the fight against corruption in the LGUs in line with President Rodrigo Duterte’s marching order to eliminate corruption in the government.

“I urge the DILG to continue pursuing this mandate, up to the last centavo, wala pong dapat na masayang na pera ng taumbayan ([so that] the taxpayers’ money won’t go to waste). Ituluy-tuloy po natin ang kampanyang ito (We will continue this campaign [against corruption]),” Go said.

“Alam ko marami na kayong na nasuspinde na mga local officials na nagsasamantala sa pagkakataong ito. And, aside from that, ituloy rin po natin ang kampanya laban sa iligal na droga at kriminalidad (I know that you have already suspended several local officials for taking advantage of this crisis situation. And, aside from that, we would also continue the campaign against illegal drugs and criminality),” he added.

Go also supported the proposal to modernize the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), noting that the plan amounts to PHP27 billion.

“I hope you can include this in the (2021) budget… The BFP needs all the help they can get, their lives are always on the line,” he said. (Mikee Cervantes, PNA)
